An Ode to Coffee

I’m not a coffee drinker. On occasion, I’ll down shots of Cuban espresso.  Those are more like sizzling blasts of liquid energy than a drink one savors with breakfast.  If my house bursts on fire, and I had to choose between my coffee maker and the SodaStream, I would grab the Brita and get the Hell out of there.

Countless writers swear by coffee. Am I missing out?  Would my creativity triple if only I pay proper homage to the coffee gods?  According to a 2015 Gallup poll, about two-thirds of Americans drink more than one cup of coffee per day.

According to Science:

Separate studies in 2014, 2015 and 2016 found coffee is good for your liver, may lower risk of heart attacks, might cut the risk of colon cancer and, as reported in the journal Circulation, one to five cups a day may generally reduce the risk of early death. A study released in March, 2016 found coffee associated with a reduced risk of multiple sclerosis (MS).

In a 2014 study from the Harvard School of Public Health found that individuals who increased their coffee consumption by at least a cup a day were at lower risk for type 2 diabetes compared with those who didn’t drink more coffee.

According to Authors:

“It is inhumane, in my opinion, to force people who have a genuine medical need for coffee to wait in line behind people who apparently view it as some kind of recreational activity.” ~ Dave Barry

“No matter what historians claimed, BC really stood for ‘Before Coffee’.” ~ Cherise Sinclair

“Coffee is a lot more than just a drink; it’s something happening. Not as in hip, but like an event, a place to be, but not like a location, but like somewhere within yourself. It gives you time, but not actual hours or minutes, but a chance to be, like be yourself, and have a second cup.” ~ Gertrude Stein

“This coffee falls into your stomach, and straightway there is a general commotion. Ideas begin to move like the battalions of the Grand Army of the battlefield, and the battle takes place. Things remembered arrive at full gallop, ensuing to the wind. The light cavalry of comparisons deliver a magnificent deploying charge, the artillery of logic hurry up with their train and ammunition, the shafts of with start up like sharpshooters. Similes arise, the paper is covered with ink; for the struggle commences and is concluded with torrents of black water, just as a battle with powder.” ~ Honoré de Balzac

Wow, ideas move like “Battalions of the Grand Army,” paper “covered with ink,” maybe I’ll give coffee another try.  Enjoy your java today on National Coffee Day 2016!

  1. I drink one big cup every morning. I stopped the habit once for about six weeks, but realized I just flat-out feel better with that one cup in my system, and I love the routine of grasping that cup in my hands as I wake up and soaking in its warmth and comforting smell.
